In honour of the TreeSisters project, which the founder has supported now for several years, Peace Valley will be planting and maintaining an Australian native edible tree grove. Bindarrabi Community have given permission to plant the grove on an area of their common land near the entrance to the community property.
October 2017
As a first step towards creating this stand of 'bush tucker' 20 young trees were obtained last week from the Mullum Creek Native Nursery at Mullumbimby.
February 2018
The trees are growing well, have been repotted into larger pots and remain under cover in the Peace Valley tree nursery. They need to be planted out once the weather cools in Autumn.
Update August 2019
Most trees were planted at the Spiral in autumn 2018, then more were added during the TreeSisters Spring Gathering. The trees have struggled with cold winds, deep frosts, the hottest driest summer on record and some haven't made it despite being protected with hessian tree protectors and regular watering. The site for the spiral was chosen thinking it was protected from the harshest weather but alas it wasn't. Many of the Bush Tucker trees are delicate rainforest trees which need a more protected aspect.
Following on from this experience the focus now will be on providing a protective cover layer of low to mid story hardy trees like wattle and tea tree and then gradually replant more rainforest trees as this cover matures.
